Transitioning from a PTA to a PTO

MPES Community,

Our PTA executive board has had extensive conversations with our KLSD peers at the IMES, KES, JJMS and JJHS PTO's. Our executive board is in favor of the dissolution of the MPES PTA (Parent Teacher Association) and creation of the MPES PTO (Parent Teacher Organization). As you may know we are bound by NYSPTA laws that in the past have taken away Before/After School Enrichment programs which we have worked very hard to start again. This year we were unable to pay the transportation fees for school trips under NYS PTA regulations. Therefore, we would like to join our KLSD community and also become a PTO. With a PTO everyone will automatically be a member of our organization. We are the only school in our community that is a PTA. This change should be seamless for our students and committee chairs and would allow more flexibility. The law firm, Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP, has generously donated their time to assist our new executive board with the creation of a new 501c3 PTO.

In order for the transition from a PTA to a PTO to take effect, we need the help of our MPES families to sign a petition. Our bylaws with the NYSPTA requires that we submit a petition signed by a minimum of 10% of our current PTA members if we are to move forward with dissolution. That petition can be found here:

Once that petition is sent to the NYSPTA, we will have a meeting on June 18th at 7pm for the purpose of voting on this matter. All current PTA members will be eligible to vote at that meeting. Please note that PTA membership is individual, not family. If you are unsure if you are a member or not, you can email us at to check.

If anyone has questions or concerns regarding this, or wants to volunteer to help next year, please don't hesitate to reach out.
